ken s asked:

I bought the 20 gig, when it first came out, and I would like to know if it will recognise an external hard drive, because then I can save up to 750 gigs easy, for under $200. Just wondering if anyone has had any success with external hard drives.

If you load Linux on to it, this is possible. However, Sony makes it extremely easy to install your own hard drive into the system. You can take out the 20GB and install your own 2.5 internal drive. Google it for more details.

I don’t think it’ll be easy with the current operating system on the PS3. However, you can buy a cheap laptop drive and install it easily.

PS3 will recognize an external hard drive the same way that it’ll recognize a thumb drive, since both are called “USB Mass Storage Class Devices” and behave in the same way. However, I don’t know if it will do the same for external DVD or CD drives, as I haven’t had the opportunity to try one of these devices.

Having said that, you’d be better off to buy a 2.5 inch drive to go into that machine instead, as you won’t have to deal with the potential lack of capabilities the external drive will have, especially with Playstation Store.
